Name origin: The highest one at the altitude of 1,412m in the National Park is the main peak called JianFeng Ling. It features steep rock faces, jagged rocks of grotesque shapes, towering and spear-like mountains. This is the reason why it's named "JianFeng Ling".
Location, coordinates and area: JianFeng Ling Branch of the Management Office of Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park is located in the southwest of Hainan Island, bordered by Dongfang City in the north, and adjacent to Ledong County in the west and east. Its geographic coordinates are 108°36' - 109°05'E and 18°23' - 18°52'N. It spans Ledong County and Dongfang City, covers an area of 679 square kilometers and accounts for 15.91% of the total area of the park. There is a core protection area of 505 square kilometers and a general control area of 174 square kilometers. The forest coverage rate reaches 98%.
Typical scene and features: As one of the areas with the most diverse species in China, JianFeng Ling is very similar to the tropical hilly areas in South East Asia in terms of specific vegetation families & genera, structural features, landform, landscape, etc. From the perspective of the plantage composition, the tropical Asian content takes a dominant and most significant position therein, reflecting the commonality of tropical plant sources between them. The primeval tropical rainforest landscape may be found everywhere, including the "Plate-like Giant Trees" in the diameter of more than 2m and the "Hanging Garden" where many plants are crawling on the tree trunks. Besides, there are the century-old large trees that are tightly surrounded and "strangled" by the strangler fig, "Old Stem with Flowers" that the flowers bloom on the stem to facilitate the transportation of nutrients and pollination, the aerial roots that are hung in the air, and the "Single Tree Forming a Forest" that are grown to a forest by a single tree in a century. There are also national key protected plants such as Cephalotaxus sinensis (Rehder et E. H. Wilson) H. L. Li, Alseodaphne hainanensis Merr., Hopea hainanensis, and vatica astrotricha.
Geological landform: JianFeng Ling Branch stands in the south of the BaWang Ling - JianFeng Ling System of Hainan Island, and has the granite stepped mountains and marine terrace landform. The highest altitude is 1,412m and the lowest altitude is 112m.
Soil: JianFeng Ling Branch has four soil types, namely, latosol, lateritic yellow soil, yellow soil and dry red soil. The lateritic yellow soil and latosol are most widely distributed and the dry red soil is locally distributed.
Climate: JianFeng Ling Branch is located at the north margin of the tropical zone, and thus subject to the tropic monsoon climate. It is warm throughout the year. Specifically, it is humid, hot & rainy in summer and slightly dry and cold in winter, and also may be cold occasionally. The average annual temperature is 24.5°C, the average annual rainfall is 2,265.8mm, the average annual relative humidity is 88%, and the average annual sunshine duration is 1,625h.
Water system: JianFeng Ling Branch is the source of many rivers and streams. Nanba River in the southeast flows through Changhua River and into the sea; Wanglou River in the south flows through Changmao Reservoir and into the sea; Foluo River and Tuolun River - Baisha Stream in the southwest and Gan'en River, Nandu River and Tongtian River in the west and northwest separately flow into the sea.
Plant resources: JianFeng Ling Branch has 2,286 species of wild vascular plants. Among them, there are 32 species of national key protected plants such as Cephalotaxus sinensis (Rehder et E. H. Wilson) H. L. Li, Alseodaphne hainanensis Merr., Hopea hainanensis, and vatica astrotricha.
Animal resources: There are 400 species of vertebrates (including 9 species of Class I national key protected animals, namely, clouded leopard, varanus salvator, M. p. pusilla, viverra zibetha, viverricula indica, arborophila ardens, polyplectron katsumatae, dorsachius magnificus, and egretta eulophotes) and 2,222 species of identified insects (including the Class I national key protected insects like golden kaiserihind).
