Alseodaphne hainanensis Merr. is a species in the genus Alseodaphne (family Lauraceae).

Protection class

It is a Class II national protected wild plant. It is also listed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and the China Plant Red Data Book.

Distribution and habitat

It is distributed in Hainan, including Changjiang, Baisha, Dongfang, Ledong, Wuzhishan, Baoting, Lingshui, Wanning, and Qiongzhong.

Morphological characteristics

This tree is all glabrous except young parts. Branchlets and young branchlets are terete. Flower buds are covered with gray pilose. Leaves are leathery, narrowly elliptic, 6-10(-16) × 1.5-3.2(-4.2) cm. The apex is rounded while the base is acute. The leave is shiny adaxially and white abaxially, with shallow foveolate and revolute margins. Petiole is 1-2.5 cm long. No flowers are observed. Infructescence is subterminal, and peduncle elongate and thick. Fruit is globose or ovoid, green when fresh but black when dry. The wrinkled carpopodium is fleshy when fresh and black when dry. It blossoms in July and yields fruit from October to February of the next year.
